    Research.

Most times, clients ask for a quick job to check a milestone and get deliverables done and dusted with minimum fuss. Sometimes, a client wants an outsider’s perspective on the operations. These usually involve informal interviews with key stakeholders at all levels of the business and a site visit to get an understanding of the brand’s unique values.

It is always worth having an asset that represents the key design values of the brand for use in small, unobtrusive places that help reinforce the brand without being too loud. Many times, there is a need for a mark where the placement of a full logo will be technically or visually inadvisable.

Brands that are actively promoted in assorted media, merchandising and third-party events need a resilient set of logo variations that can work in any design environment. Designers doing task work do not have the time and wherewithal to study a brand manual and past work to fish out the most suitable adaptation of the logo for the practical limitations imposed on their work. It is always best to be prepared in advance for the most obvious needs.

Having approved lock-ups of the brand at hand helps keep a consistent quality across all media, no matter who is doing the promotional work. Needless to say, this requires proper understanding and reinforcement of the brand’s rules and use of appropriate assets for the job at hand.

Having a consistent art direction across all media helps create mind-space in the audience. The brand’s unique values transpire by osmosis without being an imposition on the brand’s consumers. This requires a level of professionalism and craftsmanship. Nowadays it is easy to find assorted solutions on the cheap from the wildest corners of the internet and slapping them together into some frankenbrand.

Consistent reinforcement of the brand’s unique design features helps with recall and shows a commitment to quality that transpires to the public’s view of the brand. When a brand is treated consistently, the client is reassured that the rest of the business is conducted with the same diligence.

Graphic design has little to do with fine art. It is all about communicating reliably over a chaotic and noisy environment to reach your target audience and leave a positive impression. Business doesn’t happen on first encounter. Often it is first necessary for the audience to come acquainted with your brand and product. This happens over time and across many opportunities. Having a consistent and memorable brand helps your brand stand out from the rest.

A full colour rendition of the log mark if not always advisable. Many times a crisp rendition in one solid colour helps with visibility and clarity of message. This versatility also makes it possible to render the logo to great effect on most merchandising available in stock at local suppliers. Being prepared is half the battle when tasking minor jobs that are time and price sensitive.
